The Arnold Arboretum occupies 265 acres of land in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston. It is administered as an allied institution within the central administration of Harvard University. As of January 2000, the living collections consisted of some 7,082 accessioned plants representing 4,544 botanical and horticultural taxa.
The grounds are open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year. There is no admission charge, but donations are welcome.

The Butterfly Place is an indoor living environment which has been carefully designed for the propagation and development of butterflies. At any given time, one may find up to 500 butterflies representing as many as 50 different species from around the world. The Fells is an early 20th-century summer estate set on 164 acres, with outstanding gardens and trails overlooking Lake Sunapee. Gardens include a Japanese water lily pool in a hillside rock garden, a 100 foot perrrenial border, a Rose Terrace, and a walled "secret" garden Hidden behind masses of rhododenron.
